You are watching the Lake Shore Railway Museum live cam, streaming in real time from North East, a small town in Erie County, Pennsylvania, USA, near the shore of Lake Erie. The museum sits right beside two busy freight mainlines, which makes this one of the best live train cams in the Northeast. Any time of day, you can check what’s rolling through North East right now.

What you see on the North East PA rail cam

The camera looks across the CSX and Norfolk Southern mainlines that run past the museum grounds. CSX has two tracks here, on the old New York Central route between Buffalo and Cleveland. Norfolk Southern has a single track alongside, on the former Nickel Plate Road. Between 40 and 60 trains pass every day on the two railroads combined: stack trains, autoracks, tank cars and mixed freight. That volume puts this town high among Pennsylvania webcams for anyone who likes steady action on screen.

Passenger trains show up too. Amtrak’s Lake Shore Limited between Chicago and New York or Boston uses the CSX line, passing once in each direction every day. Its only stop in the area is Erie, about 15 miles west.

About the Lake Shore Railway Museum

The museum is housed in the brick passenger station the Lake Shore & Michigan Southern Railway built in 1899. It was the third depot in North East, and it later served the New York Central. The all-volunteer Lake Shore Railway Historical Society, founded in 1956, runs it today. The collection focuses on General Electric locomotives, Heisler engines and Pullman-Standard cars, and includes the South Shore “Little Joe” electric No. 802.

According to the museum’s official visitor information, the indoor museum opens from noon to 4 p.m. on weekends between May and early November, adding Fridays from mid-June to Labor Day. Admission is by donation. The grounds at 31 Wall Street are open year-round during daylight hours, so railfans can watch trains in person even when the doors are closed.

Tips for watching trains live

Traffic runs around the clock, so the camera is worth checking at night as well as during the day. Freight comes in bunches: a quiet stretch is often followed by two trains meeting. If you enjoy busy railroad locations, the Roanoke rail cam in Virginia is another good US spot for freight and Amtrak.
