Putnam County Square Webcam
Live Webcam Putnam County Square, TN Live, USA
Halfway across Tennessee on Interstate 40, about 80 miles east of Nashville and 100 miles west of Knoxville, Cookeville has been the seat of Putnam County since 1854. This Cookeville webcam looks at the center of that history, the courthouse square on East Spring Street, so you can check traffic, weather and what is happening downtown in real time. It is the main camera among our Putnam County live cams.
The courthouse itself is easy to recognize once you know what to look for:
- The Putnam County Courthouse, built in 1899 and 1900 to a design by architect James Yeaman, three stories of dark red brick in the Classical Revival style.
- The portico, carried by four tall pillars under a large arched window, facing the square on Spring Street, which is also Tennessee State Route 24.
- The north wing, a two-story addition from 1962 that sits behind the original block.
The present courthouse is not the first one here. The original county courthouse on the square burned during the Civil War. A marker on the grounds honors Jere Whitson, who pushed for the present building and led the effort to found Tennessee Polytechnic Institute, now Tennessee Tech, which the state took over in 1915.
Putnam County traffic cameras: the square vs. I-40
The Putnam County Square webcam shows city-street traffic around the courthouse, which is the place to look for downtown congestion, parades or a crowd at the square. For the interstate, the state’s cameras are the better tool: TDOT’s SmartWay traffic map carries the Tennessee Department of Transportation’s cameras and lane closures for I-40 through Putnam County. That matters on a road this busy. On June 17, 2026, a multi-vehicle crash closed I-40 East at mile marker 288, and traffic was detoured at Exit 286.
For a bigger city on the same highway, the Nashville webcam watches Lower Broadway, about an hour and a half west.
Before you drive in, check the Cookeville webcam around 5 p.m. on a weekday, when the after-work traffic of a city of about 34,800 people loops around the square. Nearby, the 1909 Cookeville Depot, restored as a museum in 1985, is a short drive west in the West Side District.
