Singapore Strait Live Cam, Singapore
Live Singapore seaside webcam over the anchorages of the Singapore Strait, Singapore.
Roughly 2,000 merchant ships pass through the Singapore Strait on an average day, and a good share of them stop to wait just off the city. The Singapore Strait live cam looks out from the seaside edge of downtown Singapore across that water, toward the anchorages and shipping lanes that separate the island from Indonesia’s Riau Islands. It is a coastal live stream that runs 24/7, listed with the rest of our Singapore webcams.
The strait is about 113 km long and links the Strait of Malacca in the west with the South China Sea in the east, which puts it on the shortest sea route between the Indian Ocean and East Asia. Ships follow a traffic separation scheme, a two-way highway at sea that runs about 463 km from off Port Klang in Malaysia to Horsburgh Lighthouse at the eastern entrance. According to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, the scheme is at its tightest just south of St John’s Island, where the westbound lane narrows to 530 metres.
On the live feed, the ships that hold still are usually at anchor, waiting for a berth, for marine fuel or for a crew change, while the ones moving steadily across the frame are working their way along the lanes. Tankers, bulk carriers and container ships make up most of the traffic. For the cranes and terminals that serve them, the Singapore port live cam looks over the harbour from Tanjong Pagar.
The horizon on this seaside webcam changes with the seasons. Between June and October, smoke from land and forest fires in the region can drift across the water and turn the anchorage into a row of grey shapes. On clear days, Batam, the closest of the Riau Islands, lies only about 20 km to the south.
Farther out, on Pulau Satumu, 14 km south of the main island, Raffles Lighthouse has guided ships through this stretch of water since 1855. It stands on the southernmost island off mainland Singapore and is named after Stamford Raffles, who founded the modern city in 1819. When it is night over the Strait, our free live webcams cover coasts where the day has only just begun.
